Julie and Todd's Diamondview Towers Wedding Setlist

The Ultimate Skybox, on the top level of the Diamondview Towers, is one of my favorite party venues in San Diego. And yes, it probably has a lot to do with this view right here.
The room overlooks San Diego's, Petco Park and after I finished my set-up I was able to watch the final few innings of the game.

It was also a fun night because one of the bridesmaids was a fellow wedding colleague, Pam Scott (an awesome photographer). What made it so awesome, is usually Pam is snapping away at wedding moments, while wishing she could head out to the dance floor; well tonight she had the chance and she, as well as the bride Julie (Pam's sister-in-law) and many others danced the night away.

Here's the full setlist.

Ben and Judy's Port Pavilion on Broadway Pier Wedding Setlist

Ben and Judy's wedding party will go down in history as the first ever wedding reception at the Port Pavilion on Broadway Pier. The new building, built by the Port of San Diego, opened to the public on December 18, 2010. Since then, there have been a host of private functions, but never a wedding ... until now.

Ben is definitely an old school guy, while Judy loves all of the new hits. Mixed in with plenty of soju (Korean drink) flowing from the bar, and it was a pretty spectacular party.

Caroline and Kyle's Hotel del Coronado Wedding Setlist

I have to admit ... I was a little worried about the 26 must play songs that Caroline sent me a few days before her wedding party at the Hotel Del Corondo. But surprisingly I played most of them. In fact I played 54 songs. Which is pretty crazy. That's about 15 more than the average that I play.

Kelly and Stephen's Los Willows Wedding Setlist

Kelly and Stephen's party was at the secluded and beautiful Los Willows, located in Fallbrook, CA. It was a relatively short dance party, but we still got in plenty of hits.

A few days before the party, Kelly sent me a list of some "must-play songs" that included a lot of Britney and Katy Perry. Who doesn't love a dance party with plenty of pop princessy stuff. Well okay, not everyone loves this. But it still makes for a pretty good time.

Here's the setlist.

Breanna and Eddie's Star of the Sea Wedding Setlist

Breanna is my wife's niece ... does that make her my niece-in-law? And it was a blast DJing for her and Eddy on their wedding day. It completed a trifecta for me, as I played music at both her 18th birthday and high school graduation parties a few years ago. It was also the first time many of my family members were able to see me perform and emcee a wedding. It's always a little more fun having familiar faces in the crowd, including my four year old daughter who finally got to see what it means when "daddy is at a wedding."

Here's the setlist.

Shaun and Waneda's Bali Hai Wedding Reception Setlist

Shaun and Waneda's wedding was my first at the newly remodeled Bali Hai, a 50 year old restaurant on the shores of San Diego's Big Bay. It's a great venue, especially for anyone looking for something by the water and a Polynesian flair.

The set lists consisted of a mix of old school favorites and current hits. But I especially enjoyed watching Waneda and her girls bouncing to Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together."

Minh-Ha and Ryan's Hilton Torrey Pines Setlist

Minh-Ha and Ryan had a fairly low key, yet beautiful afternoon wedding at the Hilton Torrey Pines. As a golf fan, I always enjoy working here, since it's a chip shot away from one of the back nine fairways. This party did not have a lot of dancing (Minh Ha herself even said there were not a lot of dancers on the guest list), but I still provided a nice upbeat atmosphere to keep folks tapping their toes.

Chris and Tessie' Gig Video

Here is a short highlight package of Chris and Tessie's dance floor. For the full setlist of all the songs that night, go here. It was another fun night working with Emily Smiley and Eric Nelte of Blue Pearl Video. Lastly, a big thanks to True Photography who sent me some photos that I will be sharing later.

In the meantime, enjoy the video!

R.I.P. Kurt Cobain

Kurt Cobain died 17 years ago today.

From 1993-1995, Nirvana (and a host of other grunge rock) was the soundtrack of Centennial Hall - my dorm at Truman State University. Listening to Kurt’s scratchy tone reminds me of coming back from class in the late afternoon or getting ready to roll out on a Friday night.

This acoustic version of Come As You Are is one of my favorites. My favorite lyric? It's simple:

Come as you are,
As you were
As I want you to be
As a friend

Enjoy!

Chris and Tessie's Setlist

A broken leg (the groom was injured just a week before the wedding) and a steady rain throughout the night didn't stop this couple and their guests from getting down all night. Chris, Tessie and their mostly out of town guests had a great time dancing to some classic disco and hip hop.

It was a fabulous night at the Scripps Seaside Forum in La Jolla.

For me, I was excited to finally get to a gig after a long winter break and bust out some new material such as Rihanna's "S&M" and Pink's "Raise Your Glass." We even had a little time for some girly pop with "Party in the U.S.A."

And the night ended sweetly with Train's, "Marry Me," a song that I'm sure I will hear a few more times this year. :)

Blogging Resumed

With a hectic schedule in October and the crazy November/December holiday season, I got way behind on blogging. In fact, I had a lot of material ready, I just had not got around to actually publishing anything. So you'll start seeing (or continue seeing) a flood of gig videos, recommendations, thank you notes, updates and hopefully a return to "My Favorite Lyric Tuesday."

I hope this message finds all of you well and that the new year is moving along wonderfully.

Finally, Bobby Earle (a fellow wedding vendor) says "blog posts are boring without photos." With that in mind here is a photo from a wedding last year (incidentally he took this picture.) It's my dear friend Natasha and I ... and bunny ears.

A December Wedding to Remember

The final wedding of a fabulous 2010 was at the Lodge at Torrey Pines where I had a great time entertaining Jamie and Cody, as well as their mostly out of town guests. They were so ready to party, that the bride and her bridesmaids were up and on the dance floor before the dinner was completed.

When that happens you know it's going to be a good time.

A big thanks to my "partner in crime" Emily Smiley, who I worked with on this night, as well as a handful in 2010. It was a great year and I look forward to another fun filled year as I continue to create memories through music.

Enjoy this gig video and for a full recap of all the songs I played that night, here is the setlist.

Jamie and Cody's Setlist

This year closed out with a fun December wedding at the Lodge at Torrey Pines. In fact, the party was so hopping that the guests and wedding party could not wait to get on the dance floor ... literally. The four course dinner was interrupted with some impromptu dancing. Once that happened, I knew we were in for something special.

I also particularly enjoyed kicking off the first dance set with Chicken Fried. Here in SoCal, I do not have the opportunity to play much country music, but I do love that Zac Brown Band song and it's perfect to kick of a dance set.

Here's the setlist.

Spooktacular Night at the Del

It's been a few years since I've DJ'd a Halloween party. What a great way to get back into the swing of things with having the honor of spinning at the inaugural Hotel del Coronado Halloween party. Platinum Pro provided an awesome dance floor, Emily Smiley planned it out to a tee, and Pam Scott took some great shots of the historic Crown Room, where the dance party took place. Check out Pam's pictures.

Will and Melanie's Setlist

While a grand ballroom is nice, the occasional a small bayside room can be fun too. Will and Melanie celebrated with 50 friends and family at Humphrey's Half Moon Inn. It was a great night and since Will is from Canada, I could not pass up the chance to play something for the Canadians in the crowd, hence the Barenaked Ladies made the setlist.

Feeling So Fly at the Abbey in San Diego

While I do DJ parties for friends every so often, it's not as often that I DJ their weddings. Natasha and Erik's wedding was one that I looked forward to for well over one year. Natasha is a great friend and former colleague of mine. From the day she was engaged to the moment she walked into the reception at the Abbey, I was always getting updates on the big day.

It was a blast seeing many other mutual friends at the party; always nice to see familiar faces on the dance floor. I also had the chance to work alongside photographer Bobby Earle once again, and it's always a great time being around him. Here are some of his photos from that day.

Enjoy some of these dance floor highlights and the setlist.

House Party .. A Wedding House Party

Brandon and Kim are part of a group of friends that I have known since I moved out to San Diego in 1999. In fact, they were the first group of people I hung out with back in those days when I didn't know anyone out here.

Over the years, many from "the group" have married and I have been privileged to spin the tunes at several of those weddings. There wedding party was at Levyland, in Carlsbad Calif. A cool rental house, right on the beach.

I hope you enjoy a few of these dance floor highlights and the setlist.

Monica and Pete's Hacienda Hotel Setlist

One of the best things about being in the wedding industry is when past clients refer me to their friends. In fact, most of my October gigs have been a direct result of a referral from a wedding I have done in the past.

Monica and Pete's wedding was one such event. Nearly eight years ago, I DJ'd Amy's wedding, a friend of Monica's. Both of them work at The Container Store and thus there were many of their colleagues at Amy's wedding. Since then, I have worked another "TCS" wedding, as well as a few local San Diego TCS parties.

Well, fast forward to 10.10.10 and I had the privilege to DJ for Monica and Pete.

Here is a look at their tunes for the night.

Natasha and Erik's Setlist at the Abbey

Here is a wedding that I have looked forward to for many months. Natasha is a close friend of mine, someone I met when she began working with me a few years ago. It's always a huge plus to perform and give it your all for someone that you know personally.

We worked in a lot of old school jams and I mixed in a little G6 remix for the first time this year, a special request for Natasha.
